Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968. This oil painting is a visual representation of the artist, Jonathan Harris, reimagining that moment in time. In the painting Harris is shown as the only person in color, slumped over being held up by Dr. King, after intercepting the fatal bullet that we have all known to kill Dr. King. What if one could go back in time and save Dr. King? What if saving him meant taking the bullet for him? In the event Dr. King had lived, would it help or hurt the Black community? Following Kings Death, President Johnson passed the Fair Housing Act which helped blacks from being discriminated against when purchasing property. Had King lived, what would America look like today for Black Americans? The intention of the piece is to create many conversations and questions. Do Black people have to die in order to create real change?
